Sunday 6th April's race

This week there was only Space Junk, Dipolar and Speed Freak at the Squaddy. There were two short races in a nice SE'er. Space Junk won both races, followed by Speed Freak (no swims!!) and Dipolar. This weekend (13 April 2008) is the last Squaddy race so we want to outnumber the 12s again!!!!!.

Sunday 29th March's race

The SFS race on Sunday saw three I14's and two 12's make the 2.30 start in Athol bay. Sydeny Harbour put on tough conditions with a tricky westerly that shifted hard to North at times, with big holes and gusts that seemed to come from no where.

After a slow first work the twelves rounded the top mark Space Junk 1st and Dipolar 2nd with the Muppet close behind. Space Junk and Dipolar after setting spinnakers chose to go to the right early for the run down to Rose bay with Muppet Gybing off early to chase a gust funneling down the Northern shore.

Speed Freak and Audaciouse went right with the 12's on the tale of the westerly gust and tussled for positions lifting up above Clarke Island as the gust shifted to the NW.

Audaciouse broke away from Speed freak in Rose bay after Kate and Ben capsized gybing to onto the bottom mark layline.Space Junkrounded the Rose bay Marker first with Dipolar second and Muppet third and this order stayed the same for the rest of the race.

Thanks again to Specky at the SFS race team for running Sunday's race.

14ft challenge at St George
The 14ft challenge was resurrected on Saturday the 15th March with St George sailing club hosting the event. Fleet consisted of four I14's and three B14's and half a dozen Skates, the race course provided perfect conditions with an incoming tide creating flat water with a steady 10-15knot NE breeze.

Before the race the local sailors briefed the visitors on the race area and its sand bar hazards. The race started on time at 1400 with the Muppet and Speed Freak choosing to be fashionably late. Muppet caught up to the pack choosing to go right early to get out of the tide.

The first work saw a lot of place changes with Audacious leading the I14's around the top mark with Space Dude close behind, Muppet moved into 2nd after Space Dude had problems with their spinnaker set.

Audacious and the Muppet had a great tussle changing places several times, Neil and Simon showed great speed both up and down wind and major improvments since Nationals. It was great to see the Kevin Linnet back on the water after taking two season off to completely rebuild his boat with racks and a rockerbox Tfoil system.

The challenge overall saw the B14's out point the I14 upwind, I14 made up for the lack of height upwind with its speed. Skates down wind showed great speed keeping up with I14's on the reeches but fell back upwind due to less sail area.

The winner was a B14! "The Nude" sailed by Richie and Lisa Reynolds. Second "Muppet" 45sec behind sailed by Oliver Merz and Greg Dixon. Third was Audacious with the father and son team of Neil and Simon Patchett.

B14 The Nude 3.25.45
I14 Muppet 3.26.25
I14 Audaciouse 3.30.29
B14 Dodge a bullet 3.35.06
I14 Speed Freak 3.42.42
I14 Space Dude 3.46.07
B14 Team Baffoon DNF

After the race all competitors retired to the large balcony on the clubs roof for a well earned beer, the talk at the bar was to have the challenge again soon. Thanks again to St George Sailing club for hosting the 14ft challenge.

Nationals
The Nationals have now been completed with Royston Vasey (Brad Devine & Ian Furlong) taking out the title with Irwin Sails (Lindsay Irwin & Andrew Perry) second and Read Between The Lines (Roger Blasse & Andrew Gilligan) third. The first non racked boat was Ghost (Adam Syme and Daniel Farthing) and second was Redback (Murray & Martin Mulholland). We were lucky with the weather and had sunny hot days with a Nor'Easter for the most part. We had 27 boats from WA, SA, Vic, QLD and NSW. There was some exciting action on the harbour particularly with crews needing to get used to the traffic - there were some very close calls with the ferries.

Friday Invitation race saw the fleet racing in a 8 knot North Easter with the start at Taylors Bay in top mark in Watsons Bay. Saturday Races 1 and 2 were started off Point Piper with a 10-12 knot North Easter, the top mark off Nielsens and wing mark in Taylors bay. Race one was won by Lindsay Irwin with Brad Devine 2nd and Glen Beebe 3rd.

Sunday races 3-4 and Wednesday races 5 -6 had a similar racing area and conditions with a moderate NorthEasterly. Thursday races 7-8 Started in Taylors in East southeaster, top mark in Rose Bay, wind 5-8 with the odd puff of breeze in the low teens.

Friday served up the toughest conditions of the regatta with a light south easterly, the course starting near Clark Island up to Shark and with wing mark just off Taylors point. Competitors made big loses and gains with upwind shifts making it hard to find a fast lane way. Roger Blasse took the win with new National Champion Brad Devine second and Anthony Anderson third.

Through races 1-8 place changes were regular and the racing close between the front bunch. The Bieker 5 Hull was the most prevalent hull in numbers amongst the front runners. Beebe hulls were never far from the top five with Glen Beebe, Warren Sare and David Alexander placing well.

The new gybing boards didn't seem to make much of difference during the regatta, with Brad devine and Roger Balsse boats having fixed cases.

Royston Vasey was very consistent obtaining several heat wins and several seconds, with Irwin Sails, Read Between the Lines and Fingers (Dave Hayter & Matthew Johnston) also posting heat wins.

Sydney Flying Squadron was a great place to hold the regatta, even if the greatest challenge is getting out of the moorings. The club was really helpful in organising the event and provided for a great presentation night.

Visiting 14 sailors by the end of regatta were starting to get used to Sydney harbour's busy water way with working commercial vessels, as well as their own race traffic to contend with. Looking to the future competitors should expect similar conditions in 2010, although the racing will be further up the harbour in the Sound.

At the AGM the working group was finalised for the organising of the 2010 Worlds in Manly, the core team consisting of Stewart Vickery, David Hayter, Kate Cooper, PRO Peter Moore and Oliver Merz.

Thanks to the Squaddy for hosting the event and all the volunteers, most important of which was Phil Yeomans the PRO who set fantastic courses. Also thanks to everyone for coming and helping to make this a very fun yet competitive event. We're very much looking forward to seeing everyone (and racing!) in Perth.

Thanks,
Kate and Oli

Nationals
Races 7 and 8 we raced today Results.

Thursday 3 January 2008
Nationals
Races 4 and 5 were contested yesterday. The results have now been updated including the outcome of the two protests. Results. The wing mark for both races was set quite shy which proved to be difficult for some, particularly when negotiating their way through the sabots. It was very interesting viewing!

Overall so far the regatta has been running quite well. The results in the top 10 to 15 have been quite varied and they are all close in overall points. It will be interesting to see what happens in the final two days of racing. There are two races today and one tomorrow.

There will be a spectator ferry leaving the club at 1pm Friday, 4 January 2008. Tickets are $25 / adult and $10 / child.

Nationals - Races 1 and 2
The 2007-08 International 14 Australian National Championships have commenced with the invitation race held yesterday in a 10 - 15 knot Nor'Easter. The first two races of the event made for a long day in a 15 - 20 knot Nor'Easter. The results are available here .

The race on New Years Eve (day) has been rescheduled to tomorrow afternoon in order to avoid the fireworks traffic and the exclusions zones so again the fleet will be heading out for two races. A more indepth update and photos will hopefully be posted during our double lay day :-)!.

Monday 24 December 2007
Nationals - Spectator Ferry
The Nationals start on Friday 28 December 2007 and run until 4 January 2008. As of today we have 25 entries. A spectator ferry has been arranged for 29 and 30 December 2007 and 4 January 2008 starting at 1pm at Sydney Flying Squadron and returning at about 4.30pm. This will make for a nice harbour cruise as well as be a good vantage point to watch the racing. Tickets will be $25 per adult, $10 per child under 12. The ferry will be the "Katika".

Wednesday 23 January 2007
International Skiff Regatta / i14 nationals
From 12th to the 21st January 2007, the International Skiff Regatta was held in Geelong, with 12, 13, 14, 16 and 18 foot skiffs competing. This regatta also formed the nationals for the 14 ft skiffs, with 41 boats competing. 4 of those were from NSW/ACT being SEATEC Get It On, The Muppet Show, Dukes and The conditions proved to be quite trialling with close racing throughout the fleet.

Fri 12th Jan - Invitation Race
We arrived to warm but windy weather to find about 140 skiffs lined up along the beach. Justin had been unable to make it and was replaced as Olie's crew by Charlie. By the time we went out for the invitation race, the wind was blowing about 20 to 25 kts, although it was very gusty. The start was quite entertaining with all classes (apart from 13s) starting at the same time. At the boat end, one 12 sailed between the pin and the boat and collected several other boats on the way through. Another 12 went to sail past them and capsized on the collection of boats.

During the race, Dukes had a massize capsize with the kite up and ended up pulling out of the race. A bit of excitement occured when Kate looked up and saw a "Sydney Ferry" ploughing down the bay, but this one stayed away from the boats. The race was won by a 16 foot skiff, however, Lindsay Irwin and Andrew Perry ("Irwin Sails") were only 50m behind in second place. It was very exciting to see a 14 beat the 16s :-).

The first night was a lot of fun, particularly as we had the opportunity to meet people from other skiff classes.

Sat 13th Jan - Lay Day
The 12s, 13s and 16s got off to a start on Saturday, however we had registration and measurement. It also gave us the opportunity to see some of the local towns and sample fresh mussels.

Sun 14th Jan - Race 1
Race 1 was one long race (being Course 3 that some people who had not seen the notice board were unaware of!). Again it was about 20kts with a few boats struggling to handle the breeze. With the length of the course, the non-racked boats ended a fair way behind and unfortunately did not finish within the time limit. Olie and Charlie ("The Muppet Show") were well placed in 27th (finished) and Kate and Dave ("Dukes") had about 6 boats behind them when told to go home. Barrie and Bruce ("SEATEC Get It On") were not far behind Dukes at that stage. Dukes also went through the finish line a lap early, to be placed 23rd and withdrew once on the beach.

Mon 15th Jan - Races 2 & 3
On Monday, we had two races in 15 to 20 knots although it started to swing before the first race. We had a postponement on the 1 minute gun! The first race was a course 1 (nice and short) and Dukes was able to get around quickly enough for a dead heat with Addiction (33rd). Dukes was in front of Muppet almost the entire race, however an excellent last run saw Muppet in 32.

Unfortunately, Dave was becoming ill and could not race in the second race of the day. Muppet improved considerably on the first race with a 25th. SEATEC and Jamie and Todd Cottee ("Cottees Electrical") did not complete either race.

Tues 16th Jan - Races 4 & 5
We thought Tuesday would be a lighter day, however by the end of the second race we were getting 30 knots. The first race was a course 1 however they had the marks very close together as we had waited some time for the 12s to finish racing. Cottees went very well placing with a 34th with SEATEC just behind in 35th. Dukes gained a good result of 31st with Muppet not too far ahead in 29. In the second race, none of the NSW 14s finished.

Tuesday night was apparently party night with the 14 sailors partaking in a Rum Bucket late into the night.

Wed 17th Jan - Lay Day
On the Lay Day, the Dukes crew went down out for some sight seeing but unfortunately the 100 year swell was not on and Bells Beach was pretty boring. They came back to watch some sailing (carnage?) in 30kts including 6 or 7 (?) 16s with broken masts by the end of the day. The 12s went out for the first race with the wrong rig up and were given time between races to change down. Unfortunately a lot did not change far enough and had a tought time racing. It was difficult picking the breeze as the water was very flat and the course area was a fair way from the beach.

Wednesday night the club held Access Dinghy races for the heat winners which was quite fun to watch.

Thurs 18th Jan - Races 6 & 7
The first race was postponed for about 45 minutes as there was very little breeze. The race was eventually started and the breeze came in to about 15 kts. This proved to suit Muppet as they moved up through the fleet during the race to finish in 21st. During this race there was a good competition between Dukes and SEATEC, however Dukes pulled away down wind placing 31 with SEATEC in 37 and Cottees in 38.

They moved the start for the second race and we spent a fair time waiting. It was by then 15 to 20kts providing more exciting racing. Dukes were excited as they were close to Muppet for most of the race and did not get lapped until the first boat (Ray and the Crazy 88) passed them to finish at the top mark. Again Dukes posted a 33, right behind Muppet in 31 and not far ahead of SEATEC in 36. Unfortunately, Cottees did not finish the race. Martin and Todd in Argo 14 (a Victorian boat) fought well with Dukes to be narrowly beaten - although it was a great two sail reach racing them home.

After 4.5 hours on the water (and very tired) we went to the club for some inter-class rivalry. The Yacht Club hosted some play offs in Tug of War, Sumo Wrestling and drinking races. After some light entertainment from the 12s demonstrating the use of the sumo suits, the events began. The 12s won the Tug of War, the 18s won Sumo Wrestling and the 14s won the boat ("drinking") race.

Fri 19th Jan - Races 8 & 9
After such a tiring Thursday, it was difficult to get going on Friday. The 12s sailed in very little breeze and we spent a long time waiting for them to complete their course. We headed out quite early and were able to watch the end of their race. Just when everyone was thinking of going home, the AP was dropped and the race began. It was about 10kts which suited Cottees and Muppet well. Muppet finished in 25th, with some space back to Cottees in 36 and Dukes in 38. The second race was postponed until Friday which was convenient as we did not get back to the beach until 6.37pm.

Sat 20th Jan - Race 10
Race 9 was held at 11.00am (although some boats were not aware). Arriving at the beach to rig for the 12noon race, Dukes found it almost empty. Muppet was just leaving for the start and SEATEC was packing the boat onto the trailor (and all others were out near the start). Dukes rigged quickly and left the beach at about 11.00 with fingers crossed they would reach the start within the time limit. They ended up sailing the course not knowing whether they had started the race. At the AGM (more later) it was decided that if the finishing time ended, boats still racing would be given a position. This meant that although Dukes was lapped (by Muppet!) they were able to get a place. Muppet came 26 with Dukes in 30.

Race 10 was then held in which Dukes and Peter and Ryan ("Holdfast Marine") had an excellent race for "not last". At the first top mark, Dukes was placed well, however a decision to put the kite up when it was getting close to 30kt resulted in a swim and Holdfast overtook them. At the next top mark Holdfast was still in front, although Dukes managed to regain ground downwind. Holdfast then had an awesome work pulling completely away from Dukes to finish in 31 with Dukes in 32. Up ahead, Muppet (who nearly lapped Dukes again) gained a 26th.

AGM
During the week the AGM was held. The main discussions were the amendments to the class rules and when they would take effect, the nationals, the worlds and finishing the back boats. It was decided that when the time limit expires, the back boats still racing will be allocated a place at the Race Officers discretion. I thought this important as on the first day a lot of boats did not finish due to the time limit and so were not rewarded for trying having equal points with those still on the beach. Some questions about the nationals in NSw next season were answered and a Notice of Race will be issued shortly. It was also evident that NSW has a lot of support for the nationals and we look forward to having a big fleet at the nationals next year.

PRESO:
We held our preso outside with the 12s and it was a great ending to an excellent regatta. This year proved to have more difficult conditions than passed years and a big congratulations to Lindsay Irwin and Andrew Perry ("Irwin Sails") for fighting off a challenge from Roger Blasse and Andrew Gilligan ("Read Between the Lines") to hold onto the title. Ron Sherwinski and James Lanati ("Flaunt It") overtook Grant Geddes and Dan Wilsdon ("Boost") on the last day for third. I unfortunately cannot recall the handicap winners, however the first "non foiled" boat was Dave Hayter and Matt Johnston ("Mexican Wave") who had an overall result of 23.

It was also excellent racing down the back with about 8 older boats present. It is good to see some new people coming into the fleet and giving it a go.

The regatta was extremely successful and Stew Vickery did an excellent job organising it. Royal Geelong Yacht Club was an excellent venue and they were well organised. I have already heard 12s and 16s (as well as 14s) hoping that such an event can happen again.

Full results are available here. Photos are available at Sail Melbourne and Teri Dodds.

Squaddy Sailing

Squaddy sailing has some what been effected by the weather and Jervis Bay regatta. The first few weeks were very windy and so no race was held. We have now had two races and a pretty good turn out, although a couple of extra boats would be nice.

22 October 2006
For this race we had 3 boats, being Toucan Tango (Tomas Stewart), Test Eagle (Ant Little and Jen Muller) and Dukes (Kate Cooper and Dave McCrudden). Toucan Tango unfortunately had some damage prior to the start and retired. Despite a late start from Test Eagle, there was a good race between them and Dukes, until Test Eagle retired after the first lap. It was great to see Jen having another go in a 14 and we hope to see more of it (it was also great to see Ant use his boat!).

Dukes had some near misses, going around Taylor's Bay mark whilst the 18's were doing prestart around it. They then had to cross their entire fleet on port. No major mishaps and they finished the race, albeit a fair way behind the 12s. It was a good way to start the season with a 10 - 15 knot SE'er.

29 October 2006
There were two boats this week, for the Sprint Series. In race 1, Dukes (Dave McCrudden and Kate Cooper) had a fantastic start and finished the race in touch with the 12s. Unfortunately, Test Eagle (Oliver Merz and Ali Gibson) were late to the start and did not finish the race, in order to make the start of the 2nd race.

There was a tight race between the two boats in the 2nd race, with constant changes in position. Dukes managed to clinch a win, only seconds ahead of Test Eagle. We look forward to more racing of this nature in future.

Shortly after the start of the 3rd race, Dukes snapped the forestay and *CRRRRACCCKKK*, the mast went too. Test Eagle finished the race and Dukes was towed back to safety.

The next two weeks will hopefully see a lot of 14s in the water, despite the absence of Dukes who expect to be back on the water in two weeks time.

Jervis Bay Regatta

Round Two of the Grand Prix will be held this weekend during the Jervis Bay Regatta. So far we have two boats from ACT and one boat from Sydney attending.
It would be great to have as many 14s there as possible and to increase the number of boats taking part in the Grand Prix.

More details available at Notice of Race

REPORT:

On the October long weekend, 3 14s headed down to the Jervis Bay regatta (and round 2 of the Grand Prix). We arrived at the club to a beautiful warm sunny day and a big breeze from the South. There were a lot of boats competing including cherubs, tasars, NS14s, spirals, impulses and various cats. That first race was interesting, particularly becoming use to the various speeds and abilities of other competing boats. There were also several other classes that needed time to become aware of the speed of 14s, with several almost port-starboard incidents. Oliver Merz and Ben ("Budgie Smuggler") did extremely well with at first in the 14s in the first race and XXX in the second. Following a lot of swims Dave and Kate ("Dukes") finished the first race a fair way behind and did not start the second, feeling extremely exhauster (and Kate sporting a very swollen chin!). Justin and Luke ("Loose Unit") had a very enjoyable sail however did not race as they were late to the first start and then ***/* breakage? */ Sunday morning was looking to be a little lighter and the NSw 14s rushed down to rig their boats. Shortly after launching, a North Easter was building providing some very exciting rides during the morning race. The start of the race was incredibly "exciting" with a pile up at the boat end resulting in a General Recall. Dukes was the first placed 14 after Budgie Smuggler decided to do an extra lap. After the lunch break, the wind had picked up quite substantially and both Dukes and Loose Unit thought better of heading out. It turned out to be a good decision with boats heading back in almost straight away. Budgie Smuggler made a good effort, but unfortunately broke their outrigger shortly before the finish of the first afternoon race and had to retire. None of the 14s competed in the second afternoon race. Unfortunately, there seems to be some error in the formal results from the club. We have deduced the final results for the 14s should have been:
Boat12345Overall
Budgie Smuggler112DNFDNC1
Dukes2DNS1DNCDNC2
Loose UnitDNFDNCDNSDNCDNC3
It was a fantastic regatta with brilliant weather. I would recommend it to everyone for next year.

i14 World Championships

It was announced last night that Sydney will be running the Worlds in 2010!

Wednesday 13 September 2006
i14 World Championships

We have received some correspondence from Ed and Olie at the Worlds in LA:

Race one was held in 5 to 8 knots which did not seem to suit the Australians. The second race, however, was held in 20 knots and big waves which saw the Aussie fleet progress upwards through the rankings. Lindsay Irwin and Andrew Perry took out the race, with Grant Geddes and Dan Wilsdon in 2nd, Ed and Olie very happy with a 30th.

Today started off with quite a lot of fog, however it lifted in time for Race three which was held in 15 - 18 knots, again with some pretty big waves (making for some hairy rides, apparently). Results can be found at Alamitos Bay Yacht Club.

(It might also interest you to know that the coast guard ribs have big machine guns and have been pulling boats over for sailing on the wrong side of the channel!)

Thursday 31st August 2006
i14 World Championships
The i14 World Championships are taking place in LA over the next few weeks. There are a number of boats competing from Australia and we wish them all luck, especially our NSW representatives, Ed Blackman and Oliver Merz in "The Muppet Show".

Sunday 20th August 2006
Grand Prix 1 - 2006 Squaddy Brass Monkey Regatta

The first official regatta took place on the weekend, being the Brass Monkey regatta at Sydney Flying Squadron. This also formed round 1 of the NSW 14ft Grand Prix.

Having 8 14s entered made us the biggest fleet at the regatta which has hopefully raised the profile of the class in NSW. We were in Division 2, with a couple of 16's, several 12s, some 49ers and a couple of Flying Dutchman.

Whilst the sun was turned on for day 1, the wind was not, with observations of "Calm 0" and "3 - 5 knots" during the major portion of the day's racing. As a result, a number of boats were DNF and the race committee were forced to postpone the second race to Sunday. The wind (or lack thereof) still seemed to suit Robert Vickery and Wayne Frankholme ("Carbon Concepts") who came 3rd, with Stewart Vickery and Justin Woods ("Argo") in 11th and the other 14s retiring early to the comfort of the bar. Free beers from the sponsors, Blue Tongue Larger, and an afternoon BBQ were a suitable end to the day and a great way to catch up with all the 14 sailors.

Sunday was looking to be similar to Saturday with a forecast 5 - 10 knots. At the start of the first race, the wind died then started to come in from behind us, resulting in a nice little kite ride to the "top mark". A shortened race found Robert Vickery and Wayne Frankholme 6th, Alan vickery and Andrew Wilson ("WAM") 7th, Oliver Merz and Ben Hillman ("Budgie Smuggler") 8th and Stewart Vickery and Justin Woods 12th. Unfortunately, David McCrudden and Kate Cooper ("Dukes") missed the gate and ended up heading home early.

As the afternoon progressed the breeze continued to increase with some more interesting sailing for all. Alan Vickery and Andrew Wilson progressed through the fleet to post a 6th and a 2nd. Similarly, Stewart Vickery and Justin Woods seemed to have a better day with a 5th and 10th. Consistency for Oliver Merz and Ben Hillman in 12th and 11th, and Robert Vickery and Wayne Frankholme in 9th and 9th, resulting in an overall win in the 14s for Robert Vickery.

Overall results are available on the Squaddy Website. The overall results within the 14s were as follows:

Carbon ConceptsRobert Vickery 1
ArgoStewart Vickery 2
WAM Alan Vickery 3
Budgie SmugglerOliver Merz 4
Toucan Tango Thomas Stewart 5
Dukes David McCrudden 5
Red Back Martin Mullholand 5
Test Eagle Ben Thomas 5

The weather over the weekend also provided a nice introduction for Tomas Stewart, in one of his first outings in his new Boat, "Toucan Tango". It was also excellent to see Martin and Murray Mulholland ("Redback") back out on the water after few appearances last season.

Big thanks to the Vickerys for coming up from Melbourne and helping to boost the size of the 14 presence at the regatta. Also thanks to the Sydney Flying Squadron for hosting the regatta and ex-14 sailor Ed Blackman for organising it. We are hoping the Brass Monkey regatta will be as sucessful next year.

Saturday 8th July 2006

Sun 26 March - SFS

The BOM actually had it right with their "we have no idea" forecast (SE/NE 8-13kts) which meant we got some practice in the light. We had a gate start and The Muppet Show (Ed and Paul) got away from us pretty quickly after the start. Back in the "classics", Dukes (Dave and Kate) and Test Eagle (Ant and Jamie) were pretty close throughout the race. A couple of good decisions on Dukes and they pulled away from Test Eagle to secure their first win in the classics. It was great to see Ant back on the water and we hope to see him every week now he has a new main and new mast stump.

Sun 19 March - SFS

With Ed and Olie in Melbourne, representing NSW and ACT, respectively, at the Victorian state titles, we had two boats down at the Squaddy. We had a 10kt SE'er and as the course we set involved some pretty shy reaching, we had some close fun racing. Redback (Marty and Murray Mulholland) came out on top, with Dukes (Dave and Kate) not far behind (Kate very excited by perfect kite drops and pretty good gybes!).
Next Sunday the 12's are at Abbotsford for their state titles and Specky and Leasa are having a week off. We will still race (gate start) and it would be good to see as many people as possible as the state titles are not far off.

Recent racing reports

Oops, Kate wrote this and a comprehensive report after the nationals and it took me two months to post it - sorry Kate.

Autumn Sprint Series 19th Feb

A 10 - 15 kt Easterly provided for really close racing between the 4 14's and 3 12's on Sunday. In the first short race (2 x WW-LW), Budgie Smuggler (Oliver and Ben) were impressive, holding a lead the entire way round the course. Ghost (Martin and Jamie) were well placed in second for most of the race, however on the last downwind leg, The Muppet Show (Ed and Paul) managed to squeeze past them. This was quite an effort as Martin and Jamie had not sailed together previously and it was Martin's first time on Ghost.

The second race was shortened prior to the start (1 x WW-LW) making the racing extremely close, with several position changes throughout the race. The Muppet Show came in ahead of a serious tustle between Budgie Smuggler, Dukes and Ghost. Dukes (Dave and Kate) were thrilled to pass Budgie Smuggler downwind, however, Budgie's superior gybes saw them sneak accross the finish line just in front of Dukes. During this leg, both boats managed to pass Ghost, which unfortunately went for a swim. So the final positions for race 2 were 1-The Muppet Show (Ed and Paul), 2-Budgie Smuggler (Oliver and Ben), 3-Dukes (Dave and Kate), 4-Ghost (Martin and Jamie).

It was great fun and the short race format was again enjoyed by all. It was also really good to see Oliver and Ben come up from ACT for a sail and we hope to see more of then (and the other ACT boats) in the future. We have also heard that Oliver has sold "Noo Wedgie" to someone in Bateman's Bay, so hopefully we will see him sailing it at the Bateman's Bay regatta, to which 4 14's are heading on 22nd and 23rd of April. It would be great to have as many 14's as possible down there for the regatta, so have a look at the calendar and follow the links to the club if you're interested. Otherwise, see you this Sunday for another set of sprints!

Belated 2006 Hervey Bay Nationals Report

Invitation and Race 1 (31st Dec).
Sailing in 20kts and a fair bit of chop provided an interesting start to the nationals where each splash felt like "getting a bucket of warm piss tipped over you" (quote-Dan Wilsdon). All "NSW" boats finished the invitation race apart from Dave and Kate ("Dukes") who ripped their jib and Jusin and Luke ("Loose Unit") who chose to relax instead. Ant and Paul ("Test Eagle") were particularly thrilled with their efforts as Ant had only steered a 14 4 times and yet managed to finish two races in such heavy winds. That night, the club had arranged a NYE function for us all which meant we were able to meet the other 14 sailors and catch up with others we knew. This was quite fun, especially as the next day was a lay day and we had nothing in particular to do!

RESULTS R1: 1-Lindsay Irwin, 2-Grant Geddes, 3-C Padman, 24-Ed, 25(tie)-Oli & Ant, DNF-Justin, Dave

Races 2 & 3 (2nd Jan): 10-15kts
After a not-so-good start, Olie and Ben ("Budgie Smuggler") quickly caught up to the back boats and we had some good competition between the "classics". Meanwhile, Ed and Phil ("the Muppet Show") broke their boom on the second work (how many booms is that now Ed?) and had to retire from both races. Spending a long time re-rigging the kite in the water between races saw Dave and Kate rip sail number 2 (keep a tally) but several general recalls meant they still made it to the next start. In race 3, Olie and Ben ("Budgie Smuggler") were a long way in front of the rest of the classics but unfortunately Justin and Luke chose to retire. On the final work, when Dave and Kate had finally caught up to Ant and Paul, Dukes slammed into a sand bank at high speed (with a massive "CRACK" as the centreboard case compressed) and Dave and Kate chose to retire and assess damage rather than continue racing.

RESULTS R2: 1-Lindsay Irwin, 2-A finglas, 3-Alan Vickery, 21-Ant, 23-Olie, 24-Justin, 25-Dave, DNF-Ed

R3: 1-Lindsay Irwin, 2-Grant Geddes, 3-Alan Vickery 25-Olie, 27-Ant DNF-Justin, Dave, DNS-Ed

Races 4 & 5 (3rd Jan)
Ant and Olie both had awesome races in race 4, both almost beating Ed, Olie then backing it up to beat Ed in race 5. Dave and Justin had very close racing down the back, but Justin managed to stay in front in both races. Dave and Kate were a bit disappointed as they thought they might get their first nationals finish where they were not the last boat accross the finish line - unfortunately, in both races the boat behind them retired. They also struggled to keep up as they were using a small spinnaker as the big one had been torn (sail number 3).After the race, Ant took Jenny out for a sail and they also had an awesome time with Jenny steering. Meanwhile, the rest of the 14 fleet were attending the AGM, where the main points for discussion were insurance and next years nationals. Congratulations to Stewy who was elected president, ahead of "skiff fest" in Geelong next year. Skiff fest will include the 16' and 14' skiff nationals, 12' skiff interdominions, and should see some 18's in attendance.

RESULTS R4: 1-Lindsay, 2-R Blase, 3-Grant Geddes, 23-Ed, 24-Olie, 25-Justin, 26-Ant, 28-Dave
R5: 1-R Blase, 2-Grant Geddes, 3-Lindsay, 25-Olie, 26-Ed, 27-Ant, 28-Justin, 30-Dave
The next day was a lay day so the Sydney guys headed to Fraser Island for a day of 4WD-ing whilst the Canberra guys hired scooters and tore around Hervey Bay.

Races 6 & 7 (5th Jan)
Arriving at the club for race 6 and 7 was quite entertaining with a high tide, 18 - 20kts and waves crashing on the beach! Race 6 was postponed an hour so the tide could go down a bit and make it safer for launching boats. Even still, a number of boats decided not to race the first race, and opted to help the others into the water. There were about 6 people per boat to make sure they could get out safely. One boat still cracked their rudder case and another returned later with the head blown out of their main sail. We sat on the beach and watched Olie struggling with the stronger winds and spending a long time capsized (he excused himself later, saying he was fixing his boat for race 7). Ed seemed to be doing much better up wind than he had been through the rest of the regatta and was up with the main fleet.

Ant and Dave both decided to join in for race 7, whilst Justin thought he would conserve his energy and his boat for the next day. Dave seemed to be dealing with the heavy winds quite well and was able to keep height (rare occurance) getting passed Ant on the first work. He also passed a racked boat (Stuey) going around the top mark! During a massive bear away, Ant capsized and put a massive hole in the main, also doing some damage to the mast stump so unfortunately retired. Dave and Kate tried to carry the kite to the finish (after watching a lot of racked boats capsize in the attempt) and instead ripped kite 2 (sail number 4). Kate was impressed at her improved kite handling skills though, after Phil had given her some handy tips for gybing. Olie did quite well in race 7 although the results do not show it - he was quite a long way in front of Dave and did well enough to hold onto his overall lead over Ed.

RESULTS R6: 1-Lindsay, 2-Grant, 3- Jason Beebe, 23-Ed, DNF-Olie, DNS-Dave, Justin, Ant

R7: 1-Lindsay, 2-Alan Vikcery, 3-R Scherwinski 21-Ed, 23-Olie, 24-Dave, DNF-Ant, DNS-Justin

Races 8 & 9 (6th Jan)
The high tide was an hour later than on the 5th, and crews were greeted with a similar view of waves crashing on the beach. Some of the skates were out racing (their nationals was held in conjunction with ours) and suffered a bit of damage. It looked quite difficult to get their boats out of the water and by that time, some of the 14's were already packing their boats up. Most of the NSW crew spent a fair bit of time swimming until the race committee started pulling in the rescue boats and we realised a decision must have been made about the days racing. We went back to find an abandonement flag as it would not have been safe to start launching boats until about 4pm. Unfortunately, the abandonement meant that Ed did not have a final opportunity to try and get ahead of Olie on the score board.

SUMMARY:
Some pretty good footage of us all sailing was taken during the week and I am hoping to obtain it in the next fortnight so we can put it up for you all to see. It was good fun sailing in relatively constant breeze and no traffic! They also started a new division this year for "non-racked boats" instead of having a handicap award, so Olie and Ant were pretty stoked that they came 1st and 2nd respectively in the nationals! The preso was pretty good fun and we managed to sell a lot of our shirts that we had left over from the states.

Final Results: 1- Lindsay Irwin, 2-Grant Geddes, 3-Alan Vickery, 25-Olie & Ben (1st non-racked), 26-Ed & Phil, 27-Ant & Paul
(2nd non-racked),29-Dave & Kate (4th non-racked), 20-Justin & Luke (5th non-racked).

There's not much sailing in January, which will give everyone time to rectify boat damage - Dave and Kate have a date with a sailmaker to fix 6 of their 7 sails, Ant is on the search for a new mast stump. Will be good to see everyone at the squaddy at the end of January for the rest of the season.
